The Project Lifecycle Management Process (PLM)

The project lifecycle management process is a common series of steps that engineers and project managers use in guiding a project from its initial concept through planning, execution, monitoring, and final closure. It provides a repeatable framework that ensures work is organized, risks are controlled, resources are used efficiently, and the final deliverable meets requirements.

PLM matters because it ensures predictability and repeatability for various project natures, reduces risk and scope creep, improves communication across teams, provides traceability from concept to completion, and supports compliance with industry standards.

PLM alone doesn't publish an official standard, but does closely follow the following core documents and established standards:

-  The PMI "PMBOK" Guide (Project Management Body of Knowledge)

-  ANSI/PMI 99-01

-  ISO 21500 & 21502 - Guidance on Project Management

-  ISO 21504 - Portfolio Management

-  ISO 9001 - Quality Management Systems

-  ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288 - Systems and Software Engineering Lifecycle Process
